Torment Magazine
Torment Magazine is a small company that produces physical photography magazines, apparel, and digital content on both its native site and social media for all things snowboarding. I was asked by a friend who works for the company to create an ad for their merchandise page to be placed on the home page of their website.
first iteration
This was my first attempt at creating an original 3D animation. Using Cinema 4D, I made an endless loop animation of a globe with the Torment logo as a country. I had this idea because snowboarding is a worldwide sport. Their movies on the website are located in countries everywhere, and I wanted to reflect the reach of the sport and the global community it creates.
I definitely ran into some challenges with using the vectors in the Torment logo to make sure the logo looked smooth on the earth. I also ran into some problems with the lighting and camera movement. I easily figured out how to play around with the lighting; however, making the camera move while keeping it in an endless loop proved to be a bit of a challenge, and I made the executive decision to keep it a still shot with just the earth moving.
the final product
Upon checking in with Torment, their crew asked me to remove the background of the stars so it would be plain black and convert it to a GIF so that it would endlessly loop on their site.
learnings and next steps
One thing I appreciate a lot about completing this animation is that I feel so much more comfortable with figuring out my workflow in C4D and am excited to create more original animations. I handed the gif off to my friend who works at Torment and their team loved it. I am so happy to have built this relationship with that company and hopefully help them out in the future.
My next plans are to take some really high-quality still renders and pitch them as posters and merchandise. I feel like this render has a lot of potential for other uses within the brand.
