STRIKE MAGAZINE UGA

First ever print and online fashion magazine at the University of Georgia

project overview

I was selected to be on the founding staff of Strike Magazine at the University of Georgia and lead the Graphic Design team. At the time, I had little experience with graphic tools like the Adobe Suite, so this was an extremely pivotal moment in my design career. A few months ago, I revisited my designs and realized how much I had grown as a designer since then and decided to redesign my story graphics for some of the articles. As a personal design challenge, I modernized, revamped, and completely stated from ground zero, and below are the before and after transformations of my work.

before

Above are three samples of designs from my time while being a design lead at Strike. The first is unfinished and is missing the text from the original design, and I unfortunately could not recover the most recent version. Overall, for little to no design experience, I am quite proud of where I landed on these designs; however, seeing them now I knew I could do so much better. They are a little sloppy, the text is off-center and awkward, and the designs feel heavy.

after

With these redesigns, I wanted an airier, more open feel to them. I opted for lighter backgrounds to pull focus to the text, which contains the titles and subject matter of the articles I was promoting. I also wanted to have more cohesive color schemes across articles and focus my area on playing around with design on the typefaces and layout structures. Overall, I am happy with my redesigns and was excited to dip back into my creative workflow in graphic design. In the future, I will continue to come back and redesign these stories to refresh my skills and use them to measure my growth as a visual designer.
